Research Impact

Renjith Jayapalan Nair's research focused on supporting the `Livelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment (LIFE)' mission where the Government of Kerala plans to build more than 750,000 houses. The beneficiaries (i.e. the people of the State) are free to choose from among 12 proposed outline building designs that will be used to construct their dwellings, irrespective of the location or climate -- which varies considerably within Kerala. The research aimed to help make energy performance and comfort considerations (including accounting for climatic variation across Kerala) a key part of the decision making for the LIFE mission.

The research comprised: climate analysis and classification of zones within Kerala; building performance uncertainly and sensitivity analysis; compiling a performance database (68,256 annual thermal/daylight simulations); and, 'curating' this data into an easy-to-use online tool which he designed (including some usability testing).

Post Disaster Needs Assesment Report

My paper on the `Influence of climate on performance of buildings in Kerala' had inferred that the State of Kerala has regions with different climatic characteristics and that the designs for buildings should be tailored for the climate zones of Kerala. These results are in contrast to the observation of the National Building Code of India and the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers.

In 2018, Kerala witnessed the worst flood after 1924. In response, the Government of Kerala along with experts from the United Nation and the European Union assessed the the damages and losses and produced the Post Disaster Needs Assessment report. The results from paper were corroborated in the report.
